Organizational Overview
History, Mission & Key Programs
Founded in 1885, YWCA Kalamazoo (YWCA) aims to eliminate racism and empower women. As a public health organization focused on social justice and providing services for vulnerable communities in Kalamazoo County, YWCA operates at the intersection of racial and gender equity, creating new partnerships, programs, funds, and impact to directly and immediately accomplish change. As the oldest and largest YWCA in Michigan, established initially to provide residential services for young women, today, YWCA Kalamazoo is a primary resource for economic, gender, and racial justice for all women, children, and families in the county. Their programs continue to meet the needs of the Kalamazoo community by addressing the service gaps that affect the community’s most vulnerable populations, children, and families of color. These service gaps include access to high-quality early learning and childcare, systems that cause racial and gender disparities, evidence-based programs to address maternal and child health disparities, and services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Through four key mission-driven, evidence-based, and high-quality strategic focus areas, YWCA’s comprehensive, innovative, and responsive programming works with communities historically underserved and pushed to the margins in Southwest Michigan, primarily in Kalamazoo County.

Promoting Maternal & Child Health
Birth equity is integral to YWCA Kalamazoo’s mission since women of color, especially Black women, have the poorest outcomes according to maternal and infant mortality indicators. YWCA has chosen infant mortality as an indicator to measure the progress of the association’s work both internally with programs and externally with partners. YWCA’s goal is for every birthing parent to have a healthy pregnancy and for every child to reach their first birthday with key developmental milestones met. The YWCA Kalamazoo Maternal and Child Health programs below promote healthy pregnancies, positive birth outcomes, and the overall well-being of infants and mothers in Kalamazoo County:
- Women and Infant Supportive Health (WISH)
- Prenatal & Parent Education
Improving the Lives of Children

This programming is culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and rooted in anti-racism and gender justice, and includes the following:
- High-Quality Childcare at Dreamery Locations (Edison & Downtown)
- Child Health Education Initiative
