Community Organizer and Trainer: Maternal Child Health

Provide and coordinate community education programs and related services for YWCA Kalamazoo’s Maternal Child Health strategic direction centered around Racial and Gender Equity. Facilitate meetings and trainings for CRADLE partners and Maternal Child Health stakeholders. In addition, develop relationships with community leaders and serve as the organization’s liaison with various constituents. Organize special events and projects that align with YWCA mission work, and facilitate both community impact areas and initiatives and YWCA internal trainings, primarily around racial equity in the organization.

Brief Description

Provide and coordinate community education programs and related services for YWCA Kalamazoo’s Maternal Child Health strategic direction centered around Racial and Gender Equity.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Plan and facilitate trainings on racial equity for the YWCA and the community
  2. Plan and facilitate trainings, talks, and other awareness activities regarding racial equity and maternal child health.
  3. Plan, schedule and implement developmentally sound and age-appropriate educational programs for community organizations around racial equity and maternal child health
  4. Engage with the community and appropriately promote organization and services at conferences, symposiums, expos, and fairs.
  5. Plan, schedule and implement appropriate educational programs for CRADLE participants
  6. Monitor curriculum, develop and update materials as needed.
  7. Maintain program participant records, collect statistics and submit reports as required
  8. Manage relationships with community partners.
  9. Attend meetings, forums, and committees of interest to keep informed of changing trends or processes for racial equity, community trauma, and related topics. Provide leadership in developing and providing culturally competent trauma related services.
  10. Remain informed about local, state, and national racial equity and community health news, narratives, and perspectives through webinars, coalitions, and other educational opportunities, in order to bring a broader, national perspective to the work at the YWCA.
  11. Work cooperatively with program participants, YWCA staff and volunteers.
  12. Maintain compliance with applicable local, state and federal funding requirements and/or regulations.
  13. Comply with Association policy regarding required reporting of child abuse.
  14. Provide community outreach and trainings to CRADLE partners, area service providers, emergency medical professionals, and other community partners on social equity and maternal child health
  15. Build the capacity of partners to provide high quality operational and direct services, through a Racial Equity lens, to decrease the infant mortality rate in Kalamazoo County and increase the overall quality of Maternal Child Health in the county.
  16. As a YWCA employee, project a positive image of the Association and its programs to the community.
  17. Remain flexible and manage changing priorities on a continuing basis.

  19. Safeguard confidential information gained because of the position.
  20. Work cooperatively with program participants, YWCA staff, and volunteers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. YWCA location- Cornerstone Building: 405 W Michigan Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49007
  2. Off-site location – Various; Outdoors, Indoors, Gyms, Hallways, School, colleges/universities, agencies.
  3. Potential outdoor events- Tabling events; Marches/Rallies; Vigils; Call to Actions; Promotional events; Networking events; Galas, etc.
  4. Actions: Sitting, standing, kneeling, bending, some lifting
  5. Frequently required to stand

  7. Occasionally required to sit
  8. Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity
  9. Frequently required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl- During “Tabling event season” generally in warmer months, April to about November.

  14. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  16. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes Close vision; Distance vision; Color vision; Peripheral vision; Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  17. Specialized equipment, machines, or vehicles used: Driver’s License and/or ability to drive; Or able to pay for transportation

Education requirements, certifications, work experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of personal/professional experience in education, communications, human services, maternal child health, or other related field required.
  2. Experience with public speaking and facilitation of trainings and workshops: One year’s public speaking or facilitation experience required
  3. Experience and strong understanding of the root causes of infant mortality, health inequities, public health interventions, and the social determinants of health.
  4. Willingness to continually engage in public speaking opportunities.
  5. Demonstrate leadership skills.
  6. Demonstrate ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, especially diverse age ranges.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of issues/frameworks regarding gender equity, racial equity, and gendered and racial violence
  8. Experience with curriculum development around racial and gender equity
  9. Satisfactory results of background checks and Central Registry Clearance

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Familiarization with YWCA Personnel Policies and Mission.
  2. Appropriate training and in-service which will occur during employment.
  3. 1-day Racial Equity Workshop & Gender Equity Training.
  4. Pronoun Training
  5. Orientation to Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Confidentiality, Mandatory Reporting
